Are you experiencing low back, hip, or leg pain and tingling? If so, you could be experiencing sciatic nerve entrapment.
The most common muscle to cause the entrapment of the sciatic nerve is the Piriformis. It is located deep to the glutes and spans from the sacrum to the greater trochanter of the femur. Runners, bicyclists and other athletes engaging in forward-moving activities are likely to develop a very tight piriformis if they do not also perform lateral stretching and strengthening exercises. When not balanced by lateral movements, repeated forward movements can lead to weak hip abductors and cause the piriformis muscle to shorten and severely contract, causing the entrapment of the sciatic nerve. Along with muscle tension, the sciatic nerve can also become entraped by spinal disc herniation. This type of pain tends to get worse the longer the symptoms are ignored so come visit us at Atlantic Spine Clinic in Mt. Pleasant. Our team of chiropractors and massage therapist are ready to get you on the road to recovery!
